If you’ve ever stepped onto the mats and immediately felt your belt unravel like a magic trick gone wrong, you’re not alone. Every beginner in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu has asked the same question: “How do I keep this thing tied?”
Good news — tying your belt isn’t complicated, but there are a few different styles, each with its own look and history.
The Traditional Knot (Standard BJJ/Karate)
This is the knot most instructors teach on day one. You wrap the belt twice around your waist and finish with a simple square knot. It’s clean, secure, and works for 99% of training. This method comes straight from Japanese martial arts, where tidy uniforms were seen as a sign of discipline and respect.
The Superlock
This knot exploded online because influencers discovered it stays tied longer. It’s a bit more complicated, but great for people who hate re-tying their belt twelve times per class.Practical? Yes. Traditional? Not really. But definitely harmless fun.
A Little History
Historically, there wasn’t much “creativity” in belt tying. In Judo and Karate, there was essentially one standard way to tie your obi, and everyone followed it.The purpose of the knot was simple:
· Keep the jacket closed
· Display rank
· Look presentable
· Show care for your uniform
As BJJ evolved, people began experimenting with knots that stayed tied better, mostly because belts were coming off far too often during rolling. A few styles caught on… and a few others emerged because some people clearly had too much time on their hands.
Which One Should You Use?
Honestly? Whatever keeps your belt on and looks respectful. Most instructors prefer the traditional knot, but none of the common methods are “wrong.”
If you’re training at our dojo, feel free to ask — we’re happy to show you the standard method we teach so you look sharp and stay comfortable during class.
